KIA and Hyundai have manufactured some car models that do not have any engine immobilizer during the time from 2011 to 2022. The purpose of an engine immobilizer is to stop the car start without the original key of the car. Now, this feature is missing from those cars, and the theft rate increased. Many videos on social media show the process of theft without the key to the car.

In this regard, class action suits were filed against the KIA and Hyundai. In the Class Action, it is written that the company did not attach the engine immobilizer to the car which resulted in the start of the car without the original key of the car. 

The name of the settlement is KIA-Hyundai Vehicle Theft Settlement. As per the settlement, the people who were affected by the theft will be provided the funds from $80 million to $145 million. This amount will be provided to the eligible owner of such cars and they will get the software upgrade in their care from the company. 

KIA Hyundai Vehicle Theft Settlement: Eligibility Criteria

The people who have purchased or leased the following models of cars from KIA and Hyundai in the US including the Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and Guam will get the claim. The list of eligible care is here.

KIA Hyundai Vehicle Theft Settlement: Claim Submission Process

You need to follow the below steps to get the claim. 

  1. The first step is to check the eligibility of the car model, for this, visit the official website of the company and identify your car with the help of VIN- Vehicle Identification Number.
  2. Now, you need some documents for the claim such as a car ownership doc, doc related to theft, or any invoice. 
  3. Now, fill out the online claim form by specifying all the details in the claim like car details, theft details, etc.
  4. Use the submit button to submit the claim form.

Compensation Details

The KIA Hyundai Vehicle Theft Settlement will cover the various financial losses of the people who purchased the car without the engine immobilizer. The list of compensation types is explained below.

Compensation for Theft or Attempted Theft

  • If a person loses his car due to robbery, the company will return 60% of the value of the car to the owner.
  • If tegre is damage to the car due to theft, then the company will check if the damage is more than 33% or $3375, and the amount will be given to the owner.

Reimbursements for Additional Expenses

  • The amount of #375 will given as the insurance amount.
  • There will be coverage for the increased premiums.
  • The company will provide an amount of $250 as the expense of transportation or similar.
  • Also, $250 will be given for the time wasted during the theft of the car. 

Software Upgrades and Key Fobs

  • The company will provide free software updates to the owner.
  • The amount of $350 per key fob will be given to the owner and a a person can claim a maximum of two key fob. 

Anti-Theft Device Installation

If the owner purchases anti-theft devices like steering wheel locks, glass breakage alarms, or others, the company will reimburse all the amount to the owner that he purchased to avoid car theft. The reimbursement amount can be up to $300 per car.
